Hey, babes! Over the last three years, I’ve received a lot of questions about blogging. “What made you start a blog? There are hundreds of other bloggers out there.” “Were you embarrassed to share with your friends and family?” “How are you confident enough to do this?” Ironically, these were similar questions I had for my favorite bloggers when I was just starting out, but I primarily began this mission for one reason: to empower my fellow young, black women. I’ve touched on this topic in other posts, but I’m proud to be partnering with Tampax and Always to share what it means to radiate #Blackgirlmagic!
As women, we’re particularly bad at this. Black women? Even more so. Forget the portrayals we see in the media. Every day we’re taught that we can only be one-dimensional. Work vs. Family. Conservative vs. Promiscuous. Tampons vs Pads?! (lol, just kidding on that one) But the list goes on. Who says we can’t just be who we want to be? Who says we can’t dress how we want to dress?! After scrolling through Instagram, I was disheartened when I didn’t see fashion bloggers who looked like me. OR when I did find them, our styles would be completely different. I initially thought it meant that there wasn’t a space for me, but little did I know what the future held.
We don’t have to limit our shine. And as for being embarrassed? How could I be ashamed of something that helps other women and comes so naturally to me! Every time I got a comment about how I inspired a young woman to start a blog or gain confidence in their style, it helped me do the same! It warms my heart anytime I can help other women of color in the bloggersphere to grow.
With everything that black women have had to withstand over the years, it’s truly amazing we’re standing, stronger than ever. We’re leading grassroots projects, fighting for better health, and dominating in the boardroom. What can’t we do?! As I walk around campus, I’m excited to see where we’ll be in the future. I want everyone woman to always feel empowered and confident enough to look and feel their best. Whether that’s during your time of the month to the best day of your life, you deserve to live YOUR life. So go and be limitless, babes!
