Or perhaps a movie or TV show? As the days grow shorter and the air gets crisp, there’s nothing quite like settling into a cozy reading nook with a warm beverage and a good page-turner. Growing up in Georgia, I never got to experience fall weather until December. I always envisioned that one day I’d stroll down the streets of a small town like Stars Hollow, coffee in one hand and a book in the other, taking in the autumnal scenery as colorful leaves fall across the sky. And while I’m an avid reader year round, there’s just something about fall and a trip to the bookstore that go hand in hand.
This year, I found that I wanted to read something that helped me get into the fall spirit, no matter what the weather felt like. I longed for a book that reminded me of the heartwarming (and quirky) characters in “Gilmore Girls” or vivid descriptions of New England fall like “When Harry Met Sally.” If you’re ready to fall in love (pun very much intended) with reading this season, try out a book from this list.
Sarah Addison Allen’s “First Frost” is the perfect book to kick off your fall reading list. This enchanting novel revolves around the Waverley family, who possess a touch of magic. Every year, the Waverleys await the first frost, which brings both the literal and figurative magic back into their lives. Allen’s prose is as comforting as a warm cup of tea, making this book a great choice for those who crave the magic of Gilmore Girls. While there are a few storylines on romance, it mostly focuses on the importance of family, just like our favorites in Lorelai and Rory.
Lucy Score’s “Fall into Temptation” is a delightful contemporary romance novel that captures the essence of small-town life and the quirky characters that make it unforgettable. The story is set in the charming town of Temptation, Virginia, and revolves around the lives of its residents. It’s brimming with humor, romance, and a strong sense of community, making it a fantastic choice for those who appreciate the close-knit, quirky world of Stars Hollow.
For those who adore the sharp wit and playful banter of Lorelai and Luke, “You Deserve Each Other” by Sarah Hogle is a must-read. This romantic comedy follows Naomi and Nicholas, a couple whose engagement has lost its spark. I’d almost describe it as enemies to lovers, but they’re already in a relationship! They engage in a hilarious and heartwarming battle of wits, much like the memorable dialogues between the Gilmore girls. It’s a delightful reminder that love can be both exasperating and utterly charming. (I’d also suggest Book Lovers by Emily Henry for a similar feel but set in the summer!)
“Only When It’s Us” by Chloe Liese is a charming and heartfelt contemporary romance that will tug at your heartstrings. The story revolves around two college students, Willa and Ryder, who form a deep connection despite their differences. Liese always finds a way to incorporate characters with a disability or neurodivergence into her work, which is welcomed in an industry that rarely centers them in their love stories. Set in California and the PNW area, you’ll love the descriptions of fall hikes and cabin getaways.
Although it’s not set in a small town, it’s hard to not giggle and kick your feet at this cozy romance. Lauren Layne’s “To Sir, With Love” is a contemporary re-telling of You Got Mail that takes place in the heart of New York City. Despite the urban setting, the book exudes the cozy and charming vibe of Stars Hollow, thanks to its lovable characters and engaging storyline.
No list of fall book recommendations would be complete without Jane Austen classics. “Pride and Prejudice” is my favorite Austen novel and the 2005 film is my favorite adaptation (the Darcy hand!). The wit, romance, and family dynamics that characterize this beloved story resonate with many to this day. Join Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy in their journey of self-discovery and love, all while embracing the charm of Austen’s world.
Looking for a book that combines magic and romance for spooky season? “The Ex Hex” by Erin Sterling is a delightful choice. The story centers around Vivienne, a witch who must break a family curse. With humor, romance, and a touch of magic, this book is a charming blend of quirkiness and enchantment.
Another recommendation for those looking for Halloween-themed novels is “The Dead Romantics” by Ashley Poston. A woman who works as a ghostwriter for a famous author falls in love with a ghost. Cheeky, right? This novel introduces readers to a cast of eccentric individuals who embark on a road trip with a hearse, delivering a deceased poet’s ashes to his final resting place. The book’s whimsical charm and memorable characters will remind you of Stars Hollow’s finest.
Fall is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the cozy and heartwarming world of Gilmore Girls or Halloweentown through these book recs. Whether you’re in the mood for romance, magic, or classic literature, these titles offer a delightful escape into the charming universes that capture the magic of fall. So grab a warm blanket, and a steaming mug of your favorite fall drink, and dive into these books that will make your autumn season feel like your own mountain getaway. Did I miss your favorite?
