My feelings toward springtime are kind of a mixed bag.
Fashion Tomi digs spring! Cute sandals, floral dresses, cozy accessories… What’s not to love??
Skincare Tomi still has some questions.
Who else got well situated with a deeply researched and thoroughly fine-tuned skin care routine (hello, summer quarantine) throughout the warmer seasons, only to struggle with dry skin come winter??
Or those ashy spots on your elbows and knees? I was dealing with that, and must affirm–it’s not the best.
So I embarked on a mission to discover the tips, tricks, and products that would soothe my dry skin without disrupting my established skincare routine.
Here’s what I found:
a genetic skin type (just like oily) experiences dryness all over your body.
comes and goes, environmental factors and diet play a part, and can feel oily and dry at the same time. Does this sound like your skin right now?
Listed below are a few pieces of winter to spring skincare advice we’ve all heard before because our moms already told us. But you shouldn’t dismiss tried and true skincare practices just because they’re not the latest and greatest trend, my friends! I’m here to testify that our moms were right.
I like CeraVe Healing Ointment for my elbows, heels, and knees. Hit those spots at least once a day (I apply before bed) and a bit more generously than you do during the more humid months.
And if those aforementioned spots are really struggling, give them some extra help every few days by adding body butter to your moisturizing routine. Apply right after your step out of the shower, while your skin is still slightly damp, to lock in hydration.
Carry your favorite kind with you at all times, and apply before you step outside to give your lips that layer of protection against the cold and against the sun’s rays that they desperately need.
Just watch out for balms containing salicylic acid; phenol, menthol, and camphor; or fragrance. Those ingredients actually typically dry your lips, even more, making you need the balm more, which just perpetuates the cycle of chappiness!
And now for a few remedies that our moms maybe didn’t mention.
Try one out in your bedroom and let it run while you sleep. The benefits of doing so have been proven to extend far beyond just remedying dry skin. They also include reduction of other wintertime annoyances like dry eyes, sore throats, dry nasal passages that lead to nosebleeds, cold and flu symptoms, and asthma flare-ups.
Oh man, this is so hard when it sounds so nice on cold nights to steam it up, layer on your snuggliest pajamas, and hop straight in bed all nice and toasty warm.
But if you can muster the toughness, cold showers help you get clean while still retaining the natural oils in your hair and keeping your skin hydrated.
Look for a facial serum containing hyaluronic acid to apply beneath your regular facial moisturizer. The active ingredients in such a serum contain both long and short acid chains, which help effectively plump the skin and keep it supple during the winter.
I’m a huge fan of this fragrance-free option that’s filled with shea butter, jojoba, and other hydrating ingredients!
(If you’re into trying out new steps to your nighttime skincare routine, you can top it off with a facial oil like this fan fave. It’s guaranteed to rejuvenate your skin overnight so you wake up with soft, supple skin!)
The most natural and effective way to hydrate your skin is from within your body; you’ve got to reach a healthy level of water intake. The skin is the last organ to receive water, so drink up!
If you struggle to do that, try making your water more palatable by infusing it with fruit, or by adding lemon, lime, cucumber, or mint. It feels fancy and it tastes good!
