I watch a lot of television. Like, a lot a lot. I can’t help it! There’s so much to watch now and I’m a sucker for FOMO. Plus, when you work from home I like to have a mindless show playing for background noise. There are only so many entrepreneurs and marketing podcasts a girl can handle. I typically share my thoughts on my Instagram stories, but I thought I’d give a more detailed list here! Note: A lot of these will switch back and forth between where they’re available.
For Fans of: Bachelor in Paradise or Big Brother. It’s oddly a mixture of both hit shows. Because of the format, you can’t predict what happens from week to week! 6 girls and 6 guys start off being coupled up in a tropical beach villa. Each week they add new cast members or ask the public to vote for their favorites to shake things up. But trust me when I say it’s a lot juicier than Bach nation. And a little bit more risque!
I somehow stumbled upon the UK version 2 years ago and can’t get enough. The US version is nowhere close to others because Americans are just generally more conservative comparatively. After hearing the current UK season wasn’t as entertaining as years past, I decided to try Love Island: Australia. Despite the fact that every single cast member looks like Ken or Barbie, I’m living for the accents and drama- especially after I read who the winners were before I started watching! Start with season 4 or 5 of Love Island UK. You’re bloody welcome.
For Fans of: 30 Rock, Scrubs
A talented and diverse cast starring Andy Samberg, Terry Crews, and Chelsea Perretti. The show centers around cops working in the 99th precinct of Brooklyn. It’s one of the only comedies I’ve watched where they don’t have the slow burn between love interests. No skipping around during the series, too. Watch it all in order and enjoy the crazy!
For Fans of: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Ok, so UKS is the only show that I could think of that is remotely close to the quirky adventures of The Good Place. But the premise is so unique it’s almost beyond compare! Eleanor (Kristen Bell) wakes up in the afterlife and is shocked to learn she made it in. Considering she was pretty much a wreck on Earth, she works to fit into the crowd of saints in The Good Place. The entire show does a remarkable job discussing ethics, morality, and the afterlife. Even though it’s a comedy, it can lead to some pretty good discussions after viewing. There’s a fun twist in the first season, so don’t chat about the show with others until you’ve finished it!
For Fans of: Parks & Rec
One of the most underrated shows on television. Superstore is currently in its 5th season on NBC but I hardly see anyone talk about it! It’s basically a fictional Walmart that follows the lives of the employees. My favorite moments are the cutaway scenes that show the customers doing random stuff in the store. Another list of talented, diverse cast members with surprisingly thought-provoking storylines for a show set in retail.
For fans of: Awkward, Freaks & Geeks, The Inbetweeners, & Fresh Meat
WARNING: This is not your average high school show. It’s much better than that. I cannot say enough good things about Sex Education. It’s one of those pieces of pop culture I think this generation is so lucky to have. It covers topics like gender expression, sexuality, religion, race, mental health, and more. And they’ve found a way to do it that is completely authentic and unforced. Yes, there’s nudity but it’s never used as a gimmick (just get past the first scene lol.) I called it Euphoria-lite because the comedic moments help offset the serious ones.
For Fans of: Big Brother
8 contestants must live alone in their apartments for 3-4 weeks. Without access to other devices, they’re forced to use The Circle (a social media app) to communicate with each other. Each week the group votes for 2 “influencers” who get to choose who to block from the Circle, thus being eliminated from the game and the chance to win $100,000. They constantly add new players, games, and twists during their time in isolation. One of my favorite things about it is that you NEVER know who’s telling the truth! Each contestant has the choice to either play as themself or a “catfish” version- the truth only being revealed if the player is eliminated or if they make it to the final 5. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of The Circle! As someone who works in social media, the entire idea is fascinating to me. There aren’t many shows that I would want to be a contestant on, but Netflix, sign me up!
For Fans of: Bojack Horseman, Bob’s Burgers, Rick & Morty, and anything with Seth Rogen
Sometimes crude humor can be simple, but Big Mouth finds a way to make it educational too! In a similar vein to Sex Education, it uses a few jokes to talk about the most horrible time in a person’s life: Middle School.
Good Girls- Drama/Comedy
For Fans of: Widows, Dead to Me
3 suburban moms are desperate for money and decide to rob a grocery store to make ends meet. One single mom, a woman paying for her daughter’s cancer treatments, and a wife fixing the financial mistakes of her husband work together to get it done. Of course, it’s never that easy. After their initial mistake, they find that they have to commit even more crimes to keep it a secret and their families safe. GREAT cast, GREAT storylines, and I honestly can’t wait for the next season to drop on Netflix! It’s very binge-worthy.
For Fans of: Athleticism ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I don’t know why I avoided this Netflix sensation for so long! Who knew a small-town JUCO team from Texas is actually the best in the country? As a former cheerleader, I know just how hard the sport actually is. No, we were nowhere close to being as talented LOL. However, I’m so glad it’s starting to get the credit it deserves! Even if you’re not into cheerleading, each team member has a compelling backstory and watching them prepare for the biggest competition of the year is captivating. The amount of injuries they push through makes me want to play this for any misogynist who doesn’t think it requires true athletic ability.
For Fans of: Killing Eve, Atlanta, Breaking Bad
Will had to force me to watch this one. I assumed it was my lukewarm feelings towards Bill Hader as an actor. All of a sudden I started becoming intrigued halfway through the first season and haven’t turned back. A hitman based in Los Angeles joins an improv group after he decides he wants to retire and become an actor. You can only imagine how crazy the storyline gets from there.
For Fans of: Game of Thrones, Dallas, Arrested Development (no, seriously), The Social Network
Succession is about a multi-billion dollar media company founded by Logan Roy. After he gets sick, his 3 children begin to plot who the “successor” will be. I mentioned Arrested Development above because of the casting parallels. I’m also a fan of the humor in small details or jokes that won’t pay off until later. Succession claims to be a drama but I find myself chuckling about the situations the Roys get into. Like Barry, I think it’s a slower build in terms of plot. The acting skills keep you hooked until the storyline really picks up halfway through season 1.
For Fans of: Lost, Marvel Comics, DC Comics
Strange things are happening in Tulsa, Oklahoma. And now that vigilantes and superheroes are outlawed, cops are doing everything they can to keep the peace. If this showrunner decides to make another season, it would probably go down as my favorite show of all time. I’ve never been so unsure of what was going to happen next in a show! Especially after thinking I knew everything because I’d read comics and watched the film (neither are necessary, btw). It’s not a remake, but more of a retelling of the story in a futuristic version of the present. The show does an incredible job discussing race in modern America, too.
Fleabag- Comedy
Another one of my all-time favorite shows. It’s a crime that Phoebe Waller-Bridges (main character, director, AND producer) only wanted 2 seasons. But I’m happy that they left it where they did. A British woman in her early-30’s deals with grief after losing her mom and best friend within a couple of years. Often breaking the 4th wall, we see how she navigates the dating world and attempts to resolve her relationship with her family.
I have a million other suggestions, but had to stop the list eventually haha. Check out the “for fans of” section to get more ideas! I’m thinking of sharing my favorites once a month with a few outfit roundups. Would you guys be interested in that? Let me know! And of course, if you start watching any of these, DM me immediately (@goodtomicha) so we can chat about it!
