I’ve been wanting to do a fun shoot for Halloween for a while! After Deeana and I were trying to brainstorm, we ended up sending each other the same smoke bomb pumpkin shots. Like, literally at the exact same time! LOL. I knew it was meant to be. And they turned out GREAT! Here are a few things to keep in mind if you want to recreate the shot.
Deeana got the smoke bombs from this website here. They last from 30-60-90 seconds, so you have to get the shot quickly! Did I forget that I have really bad allergies and shouldn’t put my face right next to a ball of smoke? Perhaps. It definitely made it harder to get the shot with my eyes tearing up like crazy! Thank goodness we had Deeana’s husband there to help us! He dropped the smoke into the pumpkin each time and handed it to me.
The wind wasn’t something I factored into our original photography plan. Smoke bomb, pumpkin, fancy dress? Check. Weather? Not so much. If it’s too windy, it will make the photos look super spooky. But it’s a lot harder to get the perfect shot!
Some colors were more vibrant than others- which in turn made it easier to notice minutes after the bomb had finished. Lighter hues such as yellow and orange, dissipated rapidly while the green and purple left a pretty ominous look. I’d suggest buying a few backup smoke bombs to practice the shots with first!
Deeana and I were convinced her neighbors were going to call the cops on us! It legit smells like fire and unless you walk outside to see the obvious green smoke floating around, it can be pretty concerning. A few residents smiled as they jogged past us while we were shooting. But there was definitely an old man Mcgee or two who gave us the “get off my lawn” look even after he realized it was just a pumpkin! Anything for an Instagram shot, my friends.
