We’ve been back for a couple of weeks now in Charlotte and I’m still dreaming of our honeymoon. It was seriously perfect! I’ll be sharing an itinerary and outfit roundups later on. However, I wanted to give some feedback on our stay at Sugar Beach Viceroy first. I’m glad you guys have been so interested in the hotel and our experience. From the moment you step off of the plane, you can tell St. Lucia is made for couples.
When Will and I were researching where we wanted to go for our honeymoon, I read a bunch of blogger’s posts and that really helped our decision! I left the planning and coordination to Will and our lovely travel agent Carey! Carey Carpenter is a travel blogger and team member at Epperly Travel. After a couple of conversations about our wants and needs (Caribbean island, A/C, personal infinity pool, close beach access, etc.) she suggested Sugar Beach.
If you’re researching resorts in St. Lucia, you’ve probably seen the names Jade Mountain and the Ladera Resort. While they both offer breathtaking views from being so high on the pitons, we ultimately went with Sugar Beach because we wanted the 4th wall. It looks pretty luxurious to have it all open, but I couldn’t imagine coming back from the beach and wanting to cool down only to be met with the same type of airflow in our bedroom. Plus, the beach is such a huge thing for me so I liked being able to access it without any transportation issues. The property was full of honeymooners everywhere you looked. It’s not an adult-only resort but it had a more adult-friendly feel if that makes sense. Will and I probably only saw 2 kids the entire week.
One of the largest areas in terms of population in St. Lucia, Soufriere offers a beach on the Caribbean side of the island. It’s about 45-60 minutes from the airport, so keep that in mind while traveling. I also liked our resort location because it allowed you to be close to local spots and tourist favorites. Taxi rides can get pretty expensive there (we never took one but were quoted $50 to visit a nearby hotel) so it’s important to be as close as possible to everything you want to do.
I’ve been blessed to stay in some truly magnificent hotels, but the best service I’ve received was at Sugar Beach best hands down. Each room gets its own set of butlers and old-school Nokia cell phones programmed with their numbers. You can call them 24/7 with anything you need! Seriously. We chatted about recommendations for resort activities, best times to head to the beach, or if we forgot to pack any kind of toiletry item, they’d show up to our room with it as quickly as possible. Most of the time we just used them to call for a shuttle to the beach or when it was time to eat. After you hang up the phone, the shuttle is right outside your room in under 5 minutes. It made it so convenient to be able to go anywhere on the property with ease- especially because the resort has a lot of hills.
Thanks to Epperly Travel and their partnership with the resort, we were upgraded from a standard luxury cottage to the luxury villa once we arrived. And it just happened to be the villa at the highest point on the property?! #casual. The house had 2 units but felt extremely private. I never even saw our neighbors! Honestly, it was so hard to leave our room during the trip! No, not in that way ;) But can you blame me?! It was gorgeous and everything I could ever want in a resort villa! Large, dual-headed shower and a bed that felt like it was made from a cloud. And the staff came to clean your room twice a day so there was never a shortage of towels or the complimentary bottled water.
Of course, the best part was our back deck. The views made you feel like you were in a tropical rainforest and you could see the infamous pitons associated with the island. If we wanted a bit more privacy from our pool day, we would just relax on the chairs right outside of our room and take a dip in the infinity pool.
Sugar Beach has a full-service spa with hair, makeup, massages, facials- you name it. I thought I was just getting a simple massage, but Will surprised me with the honeymoon package. The aestheticians and massage therapists were extremely professional and caring. And every part of the design of the “tree-house-styled” spa helps you relax. If you’re looking for an easy, couple activity to do that’s not hiking a freaking mountain, I’d highly suggest a visit here.
Like a lot of islands in the Caribbean, you’ll notice the food can be expensive. Sugar Beach has an all-inclusive food and beverage package, but it’s about $250 per person a day. A full breakfast was included in our plan so we decided to just go with that and pay for our lunches and dinner separately. And I’m glad we did! Every morning we made sure to eat a really big breakfast and never felt like we were hungry until it was time for dinner. In the end, we probably spent about ~$150 total on food per day.
There are 2 casual restaurants, a sushi spot, and an upscale dining option available on the property. The food was delicious! Will and I both love Caribbean cuisine and seafood so it was pretty perfect. There were spicy dishes that are Spanish and Indian-inspired and plenty of American style entrees for the pickier eaters. I never felt bored with the food options, but would have probably started to think about going off the property if we were there any longer.
All in all, our experience was well worth the price. I couldn’t think of a better way to start our journey together as husband and wife! The only things we didn’t get to try at the hotel were the water sports. I guess this just means we’ll have to go back one day! If St. Lucia is on your bucket list, I’d highly suggest making Sugar Beach your #1 choice for accommodations.
