To start off, thank you to everyone who took the time to complete this survey! It was so interesting learning more about my audience that a few Instagram and Google Analytics couldn’t share with me. Let’s start off with why I wanted to do something like this in the first place. For the past year, my content has been pretty much dedicated to wedding planning. Which, can you blame me? It took up a lot of my free time so I was darn sure going to get something out of it LOL. But after the commotion died down about a month after our honeymoon, I noticed my engagement on Instagram had plummeted.
I could blame the algorithm or the Influencer in Chief Zuckerberg himself, but that’s not very helpful. I became aimless in my approach to blogging and not really sure where to focus my content. I’ve always made sure to ask for feedback in comments and Instagram story polls from time to time, but having all of the data in one place makes my little marketer heart soar. It’s a lot easier to read and decipher versus perusing through comments that can disappear. At the end of the day, if you want your engagement to be higher you have to create something worth engaging with. And this survey has definitely presented me with a lot of ideas for the future! Here’s a little bit of what you guys shared.
71% of you follow less than 20 influencers, with 37% of you following only 1-10 overall. This is extremely helpful to me because I always have to remember that not everyone’s feeds mimic my own. When I think that I’ve shared something that’s been featured on every other blogger’s account (i.e. #NSALE) I need to figure out ways to either a) educate you guys on what’s happening without thinking you’ve already learned from someone else and b) find ways to make sure my own content is decipherable between the other 19 bloggers you follow.
No shocker here, a whopping 50% of you say you primarily check Instagram from 7-9 PM. When I wasn’t fully engrossed in the social media world, that was my main time, too! Getting off from work, eating dinner, and scrolling while I catch up on my favorite shows just makes sense. The next highest percentage was 7 AM-9 AM. When I’m not traveling for work, expect me to post on my feed during those times going forward.
95% of you said Fashion and style. Thank goodness or this would be a little awkward. A lot of you say wedding inspiration, too and that’s to be expected. But I loved the number of your responses that mentioned blogging inspiration and diversity topics in the survey! I’ll be honest in that while I love sharing a nice deal every now and then, nothing makes me happier than when we spark conversations about inclusion. The community that we’ve built around those topics like “Black Hair in America,” Why fashion blogging lacks diversity, “Top inclusive brands in fashion and beauty” have been heartwarming, to say the least. I’m very humbled to know that you guys appreciate my honesty through these experiences I’m navigating!
A surprising amount of you (15%) actually said this outfit from our trip apple picking last year! It was fun pretending I lived in New England for the day and you know I love a nice mini skirt! Also, don’t worry, I’m returning to my color-loving roots! I strayed for a moment when I was stuck comparing myself to bloggers who would be reposted by brands or engaged with more. I noticed their capsule wardrobes would get a bit more love. And while I love the necessity of a streamlined look (financially and fashion-wise) it’s just not for me. I’ll be working on a balance between neutrals and colorful outfits soon! Side note: I’d LOVE a hashtag for this. Any suggestions?
Newsletters aren’t a popular topic around here! Which makes sense, I also feel like they can clutter up your inbox. Some of your favorites include Refinery29, Buzzfeed, Betches, and TheSkimm (which SAME!) But here’s why brands (and bloggers) are going to continue to push for you to sign up. Did you know 59% of marketers say email is their biggest source of ROI? And 80% of of consumers that engage through newsletters, stay on the site longer. My blog and email list are the only things I own. Social media is rented space. And with the constant changes to our favorite apps, I’d love to have a place you can make sure to always find me. I promise to make sure mine holds valuable information instead of random sales tactics. You can subscribe to my overall newsletter here and my blogging topics insights here.
I am cackling as I type this out. A WHOLE 30% OF YOU WANT MORE #WILLCONTENT. Listen, I love my husband and his support for what I do. I used to wish he was a blogger too so I could just take photos with him without begging and have someone to edit my videos (lol). But I’m actually very happy he’s not. It helps give us a work-life balance and I appreciate his input from outside of the industry perspective. That being said, I showed him the numbers and he promises to make a few more appearances on stories. :) In addition to seeing da hubs, more workwear and diversity posts was about 45%. I’m excited to lean into office-type posts as I’m on the job hunt, too!
Whew. This was a long one. But I’m excited to see what we come up with in the future! If you didn’t get the chance to fill out the survey, you can still do it here! You can also share any thoughts on improvements you’d like to see on GoodTomiCha below.
