Back to School

What’s up guys! If you’re like me, you’re actually excited school started back, eek! I’ve basically been a professional student for 20 years, so how could I not be? There’s something about buying all of the new planners (that I use until October and then, unfortunately, lost somewhere in my car) notebooks, highlighters, and pens that make me giddy. After my summer interning in San Francisco, I’m ready to get back to a routine and see all of my friends! And of course by seeing I mean form study groups that occasionally transition from discussing SWOT analysis’ in Management to raving about our latest football game.

1st Year of School

Even when I was in college I learned that starting the semester off on the right foot is crucial for success for the entire term. Coming into class over prepared gives you a huge advantage when it comes to testing time. My very first class in school was called Decision Modeling. It’s basically if Excel and SAT math word problems had a baby. Sounds like fun, right? And for this creative brain, it was definitely a challenge to be excited for a 3-hour class every Tuesday morning. Because I was taking 3, back-to-back classes, I chose to carry only 2 heavy textbooks on the first day of class to 1) save my shoulders and 2) would prevent me from rushing home before my next course.

When we were first handed the syllabus, I assumed my experience would be just like any other. They explain what materials we needed (textbooks and homework software like Cengage), play a few icebreaker games, and pack up until next time. Well, ladies and gentlemen, ya girl was WRONG. Not only did we jump right into the material, but guess who was asked to read from the one textbook she didn’t have? This not only put me behind in the class but made my first day of school a nightmare.

Similarly, in college, I tried to avoid buying all of my books before classes started because of how expensive they are. I bought my very first college textbook for Biology from the university library for $220 only to get to class and not use enough in class that semester. When the time came for Bio 2, I had already tried to sell it to get my money back! Not to mention, how annoying it is when you have to buy access codes for each class, regardless of if it’s on the same website.

Enter: Cengage Unlimited

Imagine if there was a way to keep all of your books, homework assignments, and study materials all in one place? Well, this revelation would’ve made freshman Tomi very happy. Cengage Unlimited, the online subscription service is the most amazing tool! You can access your Cengage courses on platforms like WebAssign (a throwback to college math classes), MindTap and more to give students access to thousands of digital resources. The best part?! You can keep textbooks longer than your subscription if need be. You can keep up to 6 eBooks for a year after your subscription ends.

My biology book fiasco could’ve been saved and being able to access my textbook from my laptop would’ve made my first day at Clemson go a lot smoother. You only have to pay once for access to any of the courses that use Cengage! Thank goodness someone’s out there trying to save students money cause ya girl is broke (#college amirite?). Starting at $119.99 per semester, you can access all your Cengage courses. The amount of money I used to spend on all of my textbooks each term is a lot more than that.

I’d like to say that this would solve all of my problems, but until Beyonce comes to campus this will definitely do. Have you picked out your favorite products for school yet? Let me know what class you’re most excited for this semester!

  3. I need to share this with a few co workers! They have kids going back or just starting school. I used to get so frustrated buying expensive books for one semester and not being able to see half a return at the end!

Love this post – one of my pet peeves is buying insanely expensive textbooks to only use once. I’ll have to check out Cengage Unlimited next semester!
