San Francisco Intern Diary Week 3:
Bay Area Style:

San Francisco might be the only place where you see someone in a puffer jacket on one side of the street and a guy walking his dog in shorts and flip-flops on the other. It’s seriously the most mind-boggling thing. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely chilly! I just don’t think it warrants wearing the same coats I was trudging down 5th avenue in the middle of a blizzard in January. Because of the wind off the Bay, it’s always jacket weather. Thankfully I live close to work so I don’t have to worry about getting too cold during my morning walks. My go-to styles have been this tan cardigan for under $50, my classic denim jacket, and this warm fleece from Aerie. However, I’ve been eyeing this classic bomber from Everlane that will definitely come in handy during the fall in South Carolina!

I also wasn’t prepared for the corporate style here in the Bay Area, especially after the lectures in business school. My MBA program at Clemson University requires that we dress in business casual every day for class. It’s supposed to foster a professional environment and prepare us for the working world… welp. I’m working at a Fortune 500 company and I’ve never seen so many sweatshirts in the workplace! Of course, tech culture and business culture are two very different things.

Tech billionaires pride themselves on wearing the same gray t-shirt every day and vans while business moguls like to stick to a clean suit. I think it also has to do with the west coast vs. east coast. Everyone here is so relaxed when it comes to fashion. There are no rules except that comfort always comes first. Even when I worked in a large media company in NYC, it was very rare to see someone in a full suit. It’ll be interesting to see how the trends of business casual change in the next 10 years.

South Carolina blogger, GoodTomiCha, is spending her summer interning out in San Francisco with Intel. Learn more about her experience on the west coast!

I’m obviously a Warriors fan now:

Go dubs, right?! I was reallyyy hoping the NBA finals would be more climactic, but it’s fun to be in the City nonetheless! It’s fun to live in a city that cares about basketball. Growing up in Georgia and praying for the Hawks (or any other GA sports team) to prevail is like waiting for rain in this drought. Pointless! (name that movie hehe) Here’s hoping I can find a way to meet my fave Ayesha Curry before I move back to the south!

Surprise, Long Distance Relationships Suck:

Will came and visited me this week and we had the best time! However, I feel like if I was living in less exciting areas instead of NYC and SF, it would’ve been a lot more difficult for both of us. We visited the Golden Gate Bridge, Palace of Fine Arts, Lombard Street, Coit Tower, and my new fave Mexican brunch spot I shared in my previous update. We’ve been in the long distance game since 2016, so we’re kind of pros by now. It’s definitely not fun to see each other once a month, but it makes those sweet moments we have when we’re together even better! Would you guys be interested in a blog post sharing tips on how we handle it? Let me know!

This top is a must-have this summer. The tiered tank style by Madewell is under $50 and selling out fast! Shop it now on the blog

Internship Updates:

I’m finally getting names down, busier with a bunch of cool projects, and I’ve been able to grab lunch with a lot of other employees! With any internship, you should try and meet as many other employees as possible. It doesn’t have to always be about networking. You can learn so much about the company and decide if you might enjoy a different role instead! This is something I definitely learned during interning last year and made sure to write more of my tips for summer internships in this post.

Thanks for reading my weekly novel! Are you still enjoying my San Francisco intern diaries? If you’re interning or starting a new job this summer, share what you’re excited about below! Read week 1 & 2 here!
