Although sunscreen is a year-round skincare necessity, warmer weather can make the search 10x harder. Add in the fact that ya girl isn’t trying to look like Casper the Friendly Ghost and the search continues to narrow. But alas, the sun is shining and the poolside cocktails wait for no one. And after a tumultuous 2020, I can imagine we’ll all be outside as much as possible this year.
I was first introduced to Supergoop a few years ago when searching for black-girl-friendly sunscreens. Supergoop (not to be confused with Goop by Gwenyth Paltrow) is a skincare brand that takes its love of sun protection VERY seriously. Each product provides effective SPF coverage for a reasonable price point. In fact, the Unseen Sunscreen is a holy grail item for celebs like Olivia Culpo, Mandy Moore, and Lucy Hale (and it’s only $34.) It’s no secret that the Unseen is one of the best-selling sunscreen options for the no-white cast. I was curious to see if the rest of Supergoop’s lineup was worth the hype. Here are my thoughts on some of their top products.
*Note: Each standard product size should last you 3-4 months for at least daily facial usage*
As the beauty industry continues to move towards greener initiatives, mineral sunscreen has become more popular. In comparison to the average chemical sunscreen, it has a lower environmental impact on coral reefs. (If you wear chemical outside of the ocean, you’ll be good.) Mineral sunscreens can also be a better choice for those with acne-prone skin who still need SPF in their routine!
Typically mineral sunscreens are known for having the worst white cast however more brands are finding ways to formulate products that remove this issue. While I did enjoy the consistency of the Supergoop mineral sheer screen, I don’t think we’re at the point where it’s POC-friendly. It took close to 5 minutes to rub the product in and left an intense white-cast.
If using a mineral sunscreen is a must-have, I’d highly recommend this option by Supergoop. The CC Screen (now rebranded as the Protec(tint) Daily SPF is SPF 50 and a solid light coverage choice for summer. The shade tint removes the fear of white-cast woes, too. My only advice is a little goes a LONG way. The first time I applied it like a moisturizer- my mistake. Alternatively, I used only a few spots on my face and blended them with a foundation brush. After reviewing the photos, I still feel like I could’ve used less. It could’ve blended even better if I finished my makeup routine, but it was important for me to feel how it sat on the skin. It’s not the best at priming, sunscreen, or working as a CC cream. Tragically, I think the Protec(tint) Daily SPF Tint warrants a hard pass.
Ah, my first love. It’s not hard to see why the Supergoop unseen sunscreen is so popular. (Like I’m talking thousands of 5-star reviews!). It basically looks like magic before your eyes! The texture of the sunscreen can put a few people off because it’s so weightless. Try to imagine a lighter version of vaseline and that’s basically what you have. I’d suggest this for my normal/oily skin types as it leaves a pretty standard (maybe even matte?) finish. If you’re looking for the perfect SPF primer for all skin ranges, this is your winner.
I had a few black influencers suggest the Glowscreen to me after the unseen and was SO excited to try it. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t for me. Experts say your sunscreen application should be at least two fingers (2 tablespoons) for the face and neck. But if I do that with the Glowscreen, I’m left looking like a melanated version of the tin man. I think it could definitely work for those with lighter skin complexions, though! And it’s definitely a solid choice to mix with your current sunscreen or foundation for an extra vacation glow.
Well, here it is. My favorite of all of the Supergoop products is shockingly not the barely-there Unseen. Instead, I’ve found myself consistently reaching for the Play Everyday Lotion. It somehow doesn’t leave a white cast AND gives me a nice glow?! As a woman who struggles with dry skin, it’s exactly what I need. It’s also one of the only ones that consistently come in larger sizes so I can use it on my entire body with no remorse. I honestly can’t recommend it enough if you’re looking for a new sunscreen to try this season!
