How I Maintain My Protect My Protective Styles

My Hair in 2020

2020 has been a year of experimenting when it comes to my hair. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I’ve been trying to focus on hair HEALTH vs. style right now. I’ve been attached to sew-ins for so long, I haven’t been allowing my hair to breathe! It’s one of the reasons I love switching between natural hairstyles (like these crochet passion twists) every 2-3 months. Not only does it give my hair a break from being styled every day but it’s a lot easier to keep clean!

For most black hair types, the less you do to your hair, the better. It flourishes in protected styles and wash days are essentially long, sacred rituals at this point. My 4C kinky curls do best when I wash my natural hair every 7-10 days. “But how the heck do you take care of it in braids or twists?!” Totally valid question. I keep the products to a minimum and avoid full-out wash days to make sure my styles can last as long as possible. Depending on the hairstyle determines what products I use, but I do have a few must-haves no matter the style.

The Instant Game Changer

A lot of you have asked how I maintain my hair when it’s not in a teeny, weeny afro. And the secret is out! I use dry shampoo – even when I wear weaves. It helped to cut down on oil production in the extensions and kept it looking like I just stepped out of the salon! But am I alone in saying I had NO idea dry conditioner was a thing?! Guys. I’ve been missing out. The Waterl<ss Dry Conditioner Instant Moisture keeps my protective hairstyles moisturized and smelling super fresh. Because let’s be honest, NO one enjoys that musty smell.

At this point, I’ve had my passion twists in for 8 weeks and they’ve held up extremely well. Unfortunately, the look isn’t as impressive as the feel. Other products can leave my hair feeling greasy (the complete OPPOSITE of what it’s supposed to do), heavy, and doesn’t hold up well to synthetic hair. Alternatively, the Waterl<ss Dry Conditioner Instant Moisture and Dry Shampoo Foam are just what I needed. Super soft and smooth thanks to the weightless formula, but most importantly it looks healthy. I spray the dry shampoo foam into the palm of my hand and added the hair (I believe a little goes a long way) before shoots or just whenever it needs a touchup during the week! I then spray the dry conditioner from mid-length down. I’ve had such a good experience using them lately that I’m already looking into their Curl Milk, too.

What are your must-have hair products in between wash days? Have you tried out Waterl<ss Haircare yet? I’d love to know! You can grab these products at Sally Beauty.

I haven’t done a protective style with synthetic hair since I went natural 5ish years ago, but I have been thinking about trying one again later! Definitely keeping this in mind for later :)
