If you’re like me, you love attending weddings, no matter the season! It’s one of the few social events where you can get a bit more dressed up than your typical calendar allows. But how do you choose what to wear? First, consider the dress code on your wedding invitations. Does it say dressy casual, cocktail attire, semi-formal, or black-tie? That can help narrow it down, of course. But keep in mind how the venue could affect your choice. It may be hot in the south for an outdoor wedding, but an indoor ceremony with the a/c cranked could provide more options. Additionally, you might want to swap out the stilettos for platform wedges or sandals, if you’ll be walking on the grass or sand.
Are you overwhelmed? Don’t be! I’m sharing a guide to some of my favorite styles of the season for each type of reception. So, let’s dive into the wedding dress codes to help you be the best-dressed wedding guest this summer!
When your invitation says dressy casual, you can rejoice. You most likely have something in your closet that can work for the occasion. Wedding venues that take place on the beach, in a barn, or in an intimate backyard ceremony typically have this dress code. For the summer, keep it light and breezy with tropical prints for those destination weddings.
According to Brides.com, “The most important idea to take away from the cocktail dress code is that your goal is to create an elegant look wearing a knee-length, tea-length, or midi dress.” So go ahead and put away your super formal floor-length gala gowns and denim! Whenever I’m trying to decide if my wedding guest attire fits the cocktail dress code, I ask myself 3 questions. Would this be too fancy for church or a casual dinner with friends? If so, you’re heading in the right direction.
Semi-Formal attire lies between the more grandiose formalities of black-tie and cocktail. Black Tie Weddings are just that- events where the men dust off their tuxes and add a black bow tie for the night. My own summer wedding was black-tie optional! Which can mean even if they’re not able to find a tuxedo, a nice black suit and tie can work, too! For my dress-wearers, midi-length gowns are the bare minimum with floor-length as the preferred choice.
